Gold Price Per Gram

By Alex Capitol · Updated 2026-04-10 · Methodology

The gold price per gram is calculated by dividing the troy ounce spot price by 31.1035 (grams per troy ounce). At today's gold price, 1 gram of 24K gold is worth approximately $148. Prices for lower karats (22K, 18K, 14K) are proportionally less based on gold purity.

Important: Gold is quoted in troy ounces, not regular (avoirdupois) ounces. A troy ounce is 31.1g — about 10% heavier than a regular ounce (28.35g). This matters when calculating value from a kitchen scale that uses avoirdupois ounces.

In India, gold is traditionally quoted per 10 grams. In Japan and China, per gram is the standard. In the US, UK, and Europe, per troy ounce is the norm.

Why Is Gold Priced Per Troy Ounce, Not Per Gram?

The troy ounce dates back to medieval Europe (possibly Troyes, France). Precious metals have been weighed in troy ounces for centuries as an industry standard. While grams are more intuitive, the troy ounce remains the global convention for gold trading on COMEX, LBMA, and all major exchanges.

For investors, this means:

  • Spot prices are always quoted per troy ounce
  • Per-gram prices are derived by dividing: spot price ÷ 31.1035
  • Dealer premiums are typically quoted per ounce, not per gram
  • Jewelry prices in Asia are often quoted per gram or per 10 grams

How to Calculate Gold Price Per Gram

Formula: Price per gram = Spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035

For a specific karat: Price per gram × purity percentage

Example: Gold spot = $4,600/oz

  • 24K per gram: $4,600 ÷ 31.1035 = $147.88
  • 18K per gram: $147.88 × 0.75 = $110.91
  • 14K per gram: $147.88 × 0.585 = $86.51
